I'm excited to head to New York Climate Week later this month, and this year I have something useful to share before it starts.
Last year I went to NYCW in search of geoengineering-related events, and had to ask around the few contacts I had in the field in the weeks leading up to find the Luma events for things like Reflective hosting a happy hour, and EDF hosting a panel on SRM. I was fortunate to run into some people who then got me invites to other events, and the week was a smashing success. The most useful event was a Climate Emergenices Forum workshop hosted by Renaissance Philanthropy, where I met Ben Lachman, who I’ve been working with since this February. (I wrote about that workshop in The Architecture for Cooling Earth Is Finally Taking Shape.)
There are many more events this year that relate to stabilization, and Ben had the good idea to pull them all together in one place before the week starts, so nobody has to ask around. The list has over forty events on it as I write this and it keeps growing.
These are all events that are related or adjacent to the field of Earth systems stabilization, from climate tipping points to sunlight reflection to the Arctic and ocean systems. Each event is tagged by date, topic, and location. Here’s what I intend to be at:
Monday evening, The Degrees Initiative Looks Back: 15 Years of SRM Research and Engagement. Degrees has spent those years building SRM research capacity in the Global South, which is a good vantage point for asking what has actually changed.
Tuesday morning, Ocean Visions’ The State of Ocean-Climate Action in a World of Accelerating Change.
Wednesday morning, Degrees again with A New Era for SRM Research, launching what they describe as the first global study of SRM and agriculture.
Wednesday midday, Ocean Visions’ Navigating Non-Linear Climate Risk and Response: From the Arctic to the Global Climate System, whose description reads like it was written for readers of this newsletter.
Wednesday afternoon, the SRM Research Hub Crawl that the Chesapeake Climate Action Network is running, a move-at-your-own-pace set of conversations with researchers and advocates, and probably the best bet on the list for meeting people.
Wednesday evening, C2ES’s Is the United Nations Ready to Deal With Climate Tipping Points?, on whether the UN system can handle tipping-point shocks or needs new machinery. There’s a livestream too.
Thursday evening, A Plan B for the Planet? Environmental Observations and Technologies for the Future at The Explorers Club, put on with the Seabed Curtain Project and UArctic. Marianne Hagen, who co-leads the Seabed Curtain Project and who I had on the podcast in August for Can We Save the Doomsday Glacier?, is on the panel. The evening is built around sea level rise as a security and economic-risk question, which is how Marianne framed it on the podcast too. This is one is paid.
Thursday night, The Original Climate Week Karaoke with Renaissance Philanthropy.
A couple of these need host approval to register, so don’t wait on them. I’ll be in New York Monday the 21st through Thursday the 24th. If you’re going to be there and want to meet up, reply to this email and tell me which days you’re around. And if you know of an event that belongs on the list, submit it here and Ben will add it. With any luck this saves a few of you the asking-around I did last year. I hope to see some of you there.
Fantastic- thanks Paul, wonderful to see.
A global South round table on near term climate risk sponsored by the Healthy Climate initiative will take place Thursday September 24 from 2 to 4:30 PM. A few places are still available.
